What to do if you want to cover the Masturbate-a-Thon:
We're trying to strike a balance between our interest in telling the world about this masturbation-positive event and ensuring the comfort of the people who participate. Here are our guidelines for doing so; thank you for your cooperation.
Please let us know via email that you are coming, and for whom you're doing a story. Alternatively, bring your press pass or assignment letter with you on the day of the Masturbate-a-Thon. We may need to restrict the flow of press people in and out of the rooms to prevent over-crowding, but we will make sure everyone gets in.
What to expect: Clothed people will only be allowed into the common areas, voyeur's area of the webcam room, and the press room. If you wish to get up close in the masturbation areas, we'll ask that you dress appropriately--that is, get out of your street clothes and wear erotic garb and/or your skin. From the voyeur's area you'll be able to see the webcam stage, including performances, MCing, and masturbation, and the open area for masturbators who are comfortable with cameras and press.
Expect nude people, possibly engaging in self-stimulatory sexual behavior, in all parts of the space.
Note to bloggers: Come blog with us! You can participate in the Masturbate-a-Thon with your laptop -- we have wifi -- either from the voyeur's area or, if you're masturbating, the private area. (In the private area we will ask all webcams to be covered/disabled -- if you want your cam to be operable, please blog from the webcam room. You HAVE asked yourself whether you ever want to run for the senate and whether your dad knows you have a blog, right?)
Limitations: The only cameras allowed at the Masturbate-a-Thon will belong to pre-approved press. You will need to check in with our press liaison for permission to bring a camera in. NO other cameras allowed, including phonecams. We will have an official photographer present and will make images available to press. 2257 releases MUST be obtained by any photographers who take images of nude or masturbating people.
Cameras will be allowed in the webcast room ONLY, not in the private camera-free room. Violators will be asked to leave the Masturbate-a-Thon. People who enter that space are being given an assurance of privacy by us; please cooperate with us in maintaining it.
You may interview participants who are wearing identifying wristbands. We may also be able to make past participants available by phone or email. Carol Queen, PhD, co-founder of the Live Masturbate-a-Thon, will be available for interviews except while she's MCing the webcam show. Please do not approach masturbating people with questions and interview requests! Please do not pursue potential interviewees if they tell you they don't wish to talk to the press.
Any unauthorized images we learn about will be reported as violating federal 2257 guidelines. Protect yourself and us by not trying to take unauthorized pictures. If you don't know what 2257 is, for god's sake Google it before you take any more photos of naked people.
